Day 08 – Sat – Jul.26.2014 – LIMA, Peru

Peru`s bustling capital is one of the most interesting cities in South America – a potent  mix of colonial architecture, superb museums, great Pre-Columbian collections, glamorous  shops and one of the best cuisines of the world. It is built on both sides of the River Rimac and on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. It was founded by Francisco Pizarro in 1535 and was the center of the Spanish rule in South America during three centuries. Having experienced changing fortunes over its history, it is now claiming its place amongst South America`s emerging hotspots.    Our tour begins at Lima`s colonial historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. We start at the Plaza de Armas or Main Square, the heart of the city, surrounded by the Government Palace, the imposing Cathedral, the Archbishop Palace and the City Hall. We visit the Church and Convent of San Francisco, one of the greatest monumental complexes of colonial art in the Americas. We will see its basilica with 21 altars, the convent with a cloister and Clementina and Capitular rooms, the choir and the monk`s library, and the Museo de Profundis that has 111 canvases from the Rubens School. We will also see the  Sacristy, with works by Zurbaran and Rivera, the Gran Patio ornamented with XVI century  tiles from Sevilla, Moorish arcs and finally the famous catacombs, the city`s first cemetery, with  underground tunnels containing the bones of some 75,000 people.    We continue our tour through old streets with churches, colonial mansions and Moorish styled balconies, the finest of them at the Palacio de Torre Tagle. We will see the Plaza San Martin, one of the most representative public spaces of the city and maybe its most beautiful square surrounded by magnificent buildings. We proceed then to the residential and modern districts of the capital. At the district of San Isidro we will cross the El Olivar Grove Park, a cozy and romantic place with olive trees dating from Colonial times.  We will pass then the pre-Inca worship centers of Huallamarca and Pucllana. Finally we visit the commercial and modern district of Miraflores, the real base of tourist activities of the city, with many hotels, restaurants, bars and commercial centers. Its most emblematic point is the romantic Parque del Amor (Love Park) where we will enjoy a splendid view of the Pacific Ocean.   We finish our tour with a guided visit to the Larco Herrera Museum. Founded in 1926, the museum showcases remarkable chronological galleries providing an excellent overview on 3000 years of development of Peruvian pre-Columbian history. Located in a unique vice-royal mansion of the 18th century built over a 7th century pre-Columbian pyramid, the museum is surrounded by beautiful gardens. It features the finest gold and silver collection from Ancient Peru and the famous erotic archaeological collection, one of the most visited Peruvian tourist attractions. For an unforgettable experience, the Larco Herrera is one of the few museums in the world where visitors can also choose to enter the storage area with its 45.000 classified archaeological objects. Its masterpieces are considered worldwide icons of Pre- Columbian art, after being exhibited in the world`s leading museums.

Day 09 – Fri – Sun Jul.27 2014 LAN Flight # 2027H Lima, Peru 9:45 am to Cuzco, Peru 11:05 am.

Guided Transfer to the Sacred Valley Hotel and Cuzco city and Ruins tour on the way there. (4 Hours)

The old capital of the Inca Empire, Cuzco or Q`osqo means “Navel of the World” in the native Quechua language. It was indeed the capital of the great Inca civilization from the 13th to the 15th centuries when most of its amazing stone structures were built. After the Spanish conquest, many of the Inca palaces and temples were destroyed and their foundations used for the construction of colonial buildings and churches. This has made Cuzco a rich mixture of Inca and Colonial architecture and nowadays a Unesco World Cultural Heritage site.    We will begin our tour visiting the Korikancha, the ancient Temple of the Sun where the Spanish built the Convent of Santo Domingo. Then we will take a walk through the narrow streets on the way to the Main Square, where we will enjoy its beautiful architecture, surrounded by colonial houses, the Compania Church and the magnificent Cathedral, which we will visit. We will then take a ride to the imposing site of Sacsayhuaman, located in the outskirts of Cuzco, on a hill that dominates the city. It is usually described as a fortress because it is practically enclosed by three slopes, and also for its impressive walls built with enormous carved limestone boulders. We will enjoy an unforgettable view of the city and then take a short visit of the ceremonial site of Qenqo. End of the tour and back to your hotel.  Cuzco Tourist Ticket (City + Valley)

The stunning ruins of the ancient citadel, perched on a mountain peak high in the Andes, are perhaps the greatest surviving testament to Inca civilization.  Built in the 15th and 16th centuries, Machu Picchu was the secret city of the Incas, never discovered by the Spanish. It was only rediscovered in 1911 by Professor Bingham (of Yale University), and it remains South America´s most spectacular archaeological site.   Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, make the brief walk through the town markets and over the railway bridge to board any one of several coaches which will take you up to the entrance of Machu Picchu.
